Jack Petchey receiving his OBE for services to young people in East London and West Essex June 2004
Jack Petchey was born in the East End of London in July 1925. London. From a background with very few advantages he became a prominent businessman and property developer.
In 1945, at the end of the Second World War, Jack Petchey left the navy and became a clerk. He was told by the personnel officer: “You’ll never make a businessman”. However this discouraging remark did not prevent him from becoming one of the most successful entrepreneurs in Britain!
Although many charitable projects have been supported in recent years, a Charitable Foundation was formed in 1999 to support projects in East London and West Essex. The Achievement Award Scheme enables recognition of the effort, endeavour and achievment of young people in a practical and positive way.
Each month one of our club members is recognised to receive an Award. The winner receives a framed certificate and a cheque (payable to the club) to be spent on a club, or community project, of the recipients choice.
Recipients also receive a medallion, usually presented at our Club Presentation evening, where all members can recognise their achievement.
Maya is a very deserving winner; having fairly recently joined the Club with limited netball skills she has, through dedicated training, progressed immensely and has been playing regularly in the East Region Team for this season. She is a very happy, pleasant person who consistently gives 100% in all matches and at training.
Charlotte is a committed member of the Club; she attends training regularly and is always available formatches. She is happy to welcome new members into her group and encourages the players during matches and training.
Caitlin has been recognised for her hard work in all areas of netball. She has been resourceful over the past few months in her playing positions. When Caitlin first came to the Club she was only able to play at GS or GA. Nowadays she is just as comfortable playing WD/GK as well as being an Outstanding Centre. This is all due to her dedicated committment to training. She very rarely misses a training session and is always polite to her Coach and peer group. Caitlin is an asset to her squad.
Gerorgia has been a member of Crosskeys for approximately 7 years. She is a very positive and enthusiastic person; she is the Captain of the U-14's squad and always gives 100% both at training and in matches. Because of her County Satellite training she is not often able to play within her own age group, but has been playing with the 2nd Senior Team, and doing exceptionally well.
Aimee is a popular, friendly member of the squad who makes new people feel welcome. She is the longest serving member having been with Crosskeys since she was seven. During that time she has rarely missed a match or training session. Aimee is a very good Club member who will always put her netball commitments first. She has often been called upon to fill in at short notice and has seldom turned down the request. Other team members respect her 100% effort during matches and her fun personality.
Ella has been with Crosskeys for 5 years or so and has been a very loyal member. She sets a good example with her regular attendance at training and her strong play in matches.
Sky has a very happy personality; she is very welcoming and helpful to all new members and her squad peers. She is always fully committed to training and matches, consistently maintaining a good standard of play.
A very happy, smiling, helpful person. Attends training regularly and always puts 100% effort into both training sessions and matches. She is a very versatile player, happy to play in either attacking or defending positions.
Beth has only been with our Club a short time but has recently suffered a very great personal loss. Despite this she returned to training with friends and waswilling to play in League Games after a very short break. This shows a great strength of character and Beth fully deserves this month’s Jack Petchey Award.
