Jack Petchey receiving his OBE for services to young people in East London and West Essex June 2004
Jack Petchey was born in the East End of London in July 1925. London. From a background with very few advantages he became a prominent businessman and property developer.
In 1945, at the end of the Second World War, Jack Petchey left the navy and became a clerk. He was told by the personnel officer: “You’ll never make a businessman”. However this discouraging remark did not prevent him from becoming one of the most successful entrepreneurs in Britain!
Although many charitable projects have been supported in recent years, a Charitable Foundation was formed in 1999 to support projects in East London and West Essex. The Achievement Award Scheme enables recognition of the effort, endeavour and achievment of young people in a practical and positive way.
Each month one of our club members is recognised to receive an Award. The winner receives a framed certificate and a cheque (payable to the club) to be spent on a club, or community project, of the recipients choice.
Recipients also receive a medallion, usually presented at our Club Presentation evening, where all members can recognise their achievement.
Aimie joined Crosskeys in Sept 2007 with little confidence and understanding of her play and the game itself. As time passed Aimee was convinced she was a WA player, I was not so sure as she panicked, couldn't find correct space, and thought noone passed to her, so I changed her to WD. This gave her confidence in space and passing and also made her a stronger player mentally and physically.
With Aimie's Mum and myself supporting her, we persisted with her play and her confidence improved. She turned up to every training session and tournament she could and became a valued member of Year 6 team,
Well done Aimie
Claire has been with the club since she was 11. She is a very versatile player, able to play any position on the court, which she does very well. This is an asset to any team, and not many players have the ability to do so. She has very good playing and training commitment, and on the odd occasion she is not there, she is conspicuous by her absence.
She is willing to help out in anyway she can without any question, and in the past has helped the Junior club with coaching, umpiring and taking teams to tournaments. She also shows an interest in the running of the Senior club, attending meetings and having an input into the issue’s under discussion.
I value her opinion and have on more than one occasion asked her for it before I make any decisions. She is a valued and loyal member of our club.
Reah has proved to be an asset to the Club, always trying hard and playing to her potential. She has improved Rapidly within the last two seasons, is a great team player and is very supportive to her team mates.
She has shown good leadership skills which have earned her the position of Vice Captain. She is always ready to play and eager to learn, a real joy to coach and is sure to progress to a high standard within netball, if she continues to be as strongly dedicated to as she is now.

This month’s JP Award (Presented by Jo Munnion) goes to 15 year old Emma Baughurst. Emma has been a member of Crosskeys Netball Club for five years playing both Centre and Wing Defence positions. Emma is a quiet member of the squad but is happy to express her opinions with the rest of her team. Over the last few seasons Emma has played outstandingly well, moving around the court at a quicker pace and her intercepting has improved immensely. Emma is an integral cog in the Youth squad. She is a polite member of the team and is kind and courteous to new members.
